El Dorado

El Dorado is a California AVA established in 1983 within the Sierra Foothills, covering El Dorado County at elevations of 1,200 to 3,500 feet. Named for the Gold Rush era, it is among California's highest-altitude wine regions. Granitic soils and wide day-night temperature variation produce reds with natural structure. Zinfandel dominates historically, with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon showing strong results at altitude.
