GI Hokkaido, granted in 2018, covers wine production across Japan's northernmost main island. The cool continental and maritime climate, with long daylight hours in summer and cold winters, favors aromatic white varieties. Kerner and Müller-Thurgau thrive alongside Pinot Noir, Zweigelt, and other cool-climate grapes. The Yoichi district on the western coast and the Sorachi area have emerged as the most recognized sub-zones, with producers like Domaine Takahiko bringing international attention.
