Yamagata

GI Yamagata, granted in 2021, covers wine production in Yamagata Prefecture in northeastern Honshu. The Takahata area in the Okitama basin is the primary wine zone. Delaware, an American hybrid grape, is the most widely planted variety, used for both table consumption and winemaking, producing light, off-dry whites. Muscat Bailey A is the principal red variety. The continental climate with heavy snowfall provides good winter dormancy and moderate summers.
