Slovenska Istra is the Slovenian hinterland of the Istrian peninsula, covering the coastal and inland terrain around Koper, Izola, and Piran along the Adriatic. Its Mediterranean climate and flysch soils support the district's two flagship grapes: Refošk, a deeply colored, high-acid red, and Malvazija Istrska, an aromatic white. Slovenska Istra is a distinct district from Goriška Brda and the Vipava Valley, which lie further north outside the Istrian peninsula.
